Taking
care of our stock of 2500 alpacas can be difficult and for
that reason, we must follow a very strict sanitary calendar.
The principal activity in this calendar is the control of
internal and external parasites. By preventing or
controlling skin diseases, we can achieve an average
production of fibre in the order of 5 pounds per animal,
where the normal native average is 4.5 pounds per animal.
Mating is carried out between December and February and the
newly born arrive eleven months later. The rainy season,
normally from December to March, helps to produce the
abundant, fertile grasslands which are perfect for
mating
and also for the re-growth of the fibre after shearing,
which takes place in December. In March or April we proceed
to mark or identify the newly-born by placing rings on the
ears. Rings are placed on the right ear of males and on the
left ears of females and each ring states the number of the
animal, the year of birth and initials of the owner.
Our alpacas are white, we do not raise coloured alpacas
since the white ones are the most used in the woollen
industry. The quality of the grasslands is so good, that we
can raise or manage up to 3000 alpacas, planned for the year
2008. For the time being we manage 2500 animals of which
2000 are huacayas and 500 suris. The district of Nuņoa
specializes in breeding alpacas suris and there one can find
the most populated area in the world for alpaca suri, and
Fundo Palca is part of this world.

In October the Fair of Nuņoa takes place and it is very
important since in this region one can find the finest
animals in Peru. Fundo Palca gained the distinction of
rearing Champion in 2003 and 2004 in the category of 2 and
3-year-old reproductive males with honourable mentions in
the female section also. We hope to win more awards in
2005/2006. |
